A. A muffler is needed to muffle the sound of the escaping gases from the engine. The gases have such a high pressure, that without a muffler, the car would make a tremendous noise. How does it work? A muffler is made of metal plating or tubing with a series of holes in it. As the gas passes through the muffler, its pressure decreases as some of it is allowed to escape.
